This November 29, the United Nations promotes a global conversation marking the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People with the hashtag #PalestineDay.

The celebration was highlighted at the United Nations International Media Seminar on Peace in the Middle East, which brought together journalists, industry experts, think tanks, diplomats and academics in the middle of this month.

Dynamics and trends
Participants from the Middle East included Israelis and Palestinians, as well as citizens from Europe, the United States and other parts of the world. The focus of the discussions was the dynamics and trends of the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.

In a message, the Secretary General of the United Nations highlighted that the situation in the Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, continues to represent a significant challenge for international peace and security.

António Guterres highlights the “persistent violations of Palestinian rights”, along with the expansion of settlements, which increases the risk of eroding the prospect of a two-state solution.

The UN head said he was encouraged by the recent commitments of the two parties allied to international efforts to restart the dialogue. However, he stresses that containing the Israeli and Palestinian situation is not enough.

For Guterres, in general the goal remains the creation of two states: one Israeli and the other Palestinian living together peacefully, and meeting the borders based on the 1967 lines and Jerusalem as the capital of both.

The UN leader urges the parties to avoid unilateral measures that could undermine the chances of a peaceful resolution of the conflict based on international law and the resolutions adopted by the organization on the issue.

Another request is for a commitment “in a constructive way” to end the blockade of the Gaza Strip and improve living conditions for all Palestinians.
